Software which allows you to read electronic texts (e-books) on a cellphone or any other devices supporting JAVA™ MIDP. The advantage is easy, weel-arranged and intiutive user interface (although you use just a small cell phone diplay), nonexistence of any operators limitation (e-books are able to read from anywhere in the world), decentralization and versatility of published texts.

Program description

iWEBReader is very easy program, which change your mobile device into a library. It consists of the two parts.

  • The first one is client part , which is absolutely sufficient for reading of e-books. Fyzicaly, it is the application you have to install on your device (see instalation).
There is a short menu where you run the application. You move in the menu with help of cursor keys or any other keys according to your device.
When ÿou run the application for the first time the best option to choose is Load. In such a case cell phone try to connect to the server side on internet. In most cases device asks you whether you would like to connect to the remote device. It is a need to choose the Zde je nutné zvolit an affirmative answer to be able to access mobile network on the internet.

(*) For the right behaviour of the application, there must be set up data profile (connection to internet - not WAP!). For more information contact your operator.
Connection indicator informs you promptly about connection process. Size of transmitted data is minimal in case of loading directory structure (c. 1kB). When you load the final text file there are different size of blocks you can choose in options (see below).
You can browse through the library in a same way like you do on the computer. You can go into the directory (if you chose directory) or it happen to load the file with text (if you chose file).

Required text will show on the display when user choose file and the file succefuly loads. There is a actual position in text indicator on the top. The bottom part is reserved for the total position in the file indicator.

    Controls:

Down arrow (kye 8) - next page
Up arrow (key 2) - previous page
Right arrow (key 6) - next line
Left arrow (key 4) - previous line
Key 1 - sets bookmark in current text block
Key 3 - go to bookmark
Enter key (key 5) - reading menu
Key * - temporary switch on/off backlight of display
Key # - cyclic change of font size (small, medium, large)

Context menu (reading menu) called directly from reading has following form.
There is a possibility to go to the main menu.
Choosin the option Go to ... you can quickly enter various parts of the text (begin, end, bookmark, percentual position of the file).
Very important is Load another part item. By choosing this you are able to load another parts of the file into the application. You can go to the next or the previus parts. Active part (currently read) is specially highlighted.
File information shows in a simple and clear way information about the file (name, size, position in file etc.)
Different options are able to change in the application. These options are related to the remote part (server) or to the text options.
    Connection options:
iWEB server address - address of the library (do not forget the last slash!)
No of loaded folder items - number of items choosed will be the maximum, which is going to be displayed. Other items can be reached by choosing items "<--" (back) and "-->" (forward).
Block size of loaded text - choose appropriate size, which will be taken as maximal block size of loaded text. It is better to choose smaller size in couple of devices, becouse they have only limited size of memory for application data.
    Text properties:
Colors - possibility to change color theme
    Font style - bold, italic
Font size - small, middle, large (there are couple of devices which do not display more than one font size properly)
    Word wrap - self explaining
Ignore multiple line feed - if there are more than one line feeds going one after another, those are ignored and replaced by only one
Backlight - Switch on/off permanent display backlight during the text reading

  • You can optionaly use also server part . It alows you to create your own library on the internet. This library could be than managed by yourself - you would be able to insert whatever e-books you like. Default library is http://iweb.studio.cz/library/. You can find some internet free to download e-texts there. Author of this software did not intended this application to be centralized, so there is a great possibility to allow users to create there own private libraries in this way. They could become publicaly known to the other users by thier publication in our libraries list.

Client instalation

There are two kinds of instalation, according to device possibilities.

  1. Application could be downloaded through the mobile phone WAP browser. For other information go to http://iweb.studio.cz/wap/reader/index.wml
  2. The easier way of instaling consists of direct download of the application to the mobile phone with help of cable or bluetooth. you will need client files JAD and JAR to do this. For other information see download.

Server instalation (optional)

Server instalation is very simple . This part is realized by the script written in PHP. It meens, without support of this script language on the server side you will not be able to use server. But... There are many of webhosting companies providing this feature for free or for minimum price.

If you than have web server with PHP it is enough to download file server2.zip (server.zip for older version). After downloading to the local drive, unzip the file and send it to whatever directory on your web server (with FTP or any other interface, supplyed by your web hosting company). This directory will be your ROOT for your new library.

Directory tree example :

ROOT (for example. http://www.mypages.com/library/)
Nonfiction
Journals
Fairy tails
Books of travel
Special
./index.php (script, providing whole communication with client application)

Download

Client part is distributed in more versions (for different devices and languages). Choose the one that suits you and your mobile phone best:

Language Device
Nokia compatible (fullscreen mode) The others
New version** (v.1.0.2)
Czech iWEBReader2NokiaCZ.jad; iWEBReader2NokiaCZ.jar iWEBReader2CZ.jad; iWEBReader2CZ.jar
English iWEBReader2NokiaEN.jad; iWEBReader2NokiaEN.jar iWEBReader2EN.jad; iWEBReader2EN.jar
Older version (v.1.0.1)

English iWEBReaderNokiaEN.jad; iWEBReaderNokiaEN.jar iWEBReaderEN.jad; iWEBReaderEN.jar

(*) Some cell phones need also Java Descriptor File (JAD file) others do not. If you load application to you device with cable or bluetooth you will not need JAD file in most cases.

(**) Authentication on server side added. Downloading works now in packed form (GZIP), this feature will save you 40 - 50% of GPRS costs!

Supported devices

There could be support for all devices supporting standard JAVA MIDP version 1 and 2. But... JAVA versions are more or less different in reality. It can happen some complications both during the instalation and using iWEBReader.

Client has beed tested on many emulators of real phones at first:

  • Nokia emulator
  • Motorola emulator
  • Siemens emulator
  • Sony Ericsson emulator
  • Sun MIDP 1 emulator
  • Sun MIDP 2 emulator

Already tested devices :

(*) If you have any other device, please let us know your experience.
